Summary of Key Terms


Some of the terms used in Rugby are similar to those used in football but with different meanings.
 
Cauliflower ear - ears become thick and lumpy after being hit cotinuously.
 
Conversion - convert a try into a goal by kicking the ball over the crossbar and between the goal posts without first touching a team-mate or the ground.
 
Drop goal - scored by dropping the ball to the ground and kicking it as it begins to bounce back up so that it goes over the crossbar and between the goal posts.
 
Goal - a successful kick in mid-game or from a penalty so the ball goes above the crossbar and through the goalposts of the opposing team.
 
Goosestep - quick fancy foot movement to avoid a tackle.
 
Scrum - both teams line up heads down and shoulders pushing against to get the ball underneath.
 
Tackle - the ball carrier is held by one or more opponents and brought to ground.
 
Touchdown - the act of touching the ground with the ball behind the opponents goal line to score a try.
 
Try - touching the ball to the ground in the in-goal area of the opposing team (behind the goalposts).
